Bio

Simon Jones is a Professor of Musculoskeletal Ageing at the University of Birmingham and the Deputy Director of the Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research.

He has expertise in the molecular mechanisms that mediate ageing and chronic inflammatory disease, in particularly remodelling of skeletal muscle with age and obesity (sarcopenic obesity), and ageing of the joint-osteoarthritis. Funded by bodies such as UKRI, industry (AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly), and research charities (Versus Arthritis, Dunhill Medical Trust), his research group consisting of Post-Doctoral Fellows, PhD/MRes students and visiting academics has made sustained and significant contributions to the field. Within the research field of sarcopenia and adiposity, his research group has developed expertise in utilising human primary myotube cultures in 3D cellular cross-talk assays.

Prof Jones also has valuable experience in the pharmaceutical sector, leading both small molecule drug discovery projects at AstraZeneca, and the development of new biological entities at Boehringer Ingelheim.
