Byron Batten

Byron is the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Theme Lead for the Birmingham BRC, as well as the Chair of our Research Culture and EDI Committee. He collaborates with other NIHR infrastructures to ensure a coordinated approach on community engagement for staff, understanding mistrust in health research, patient partner engagement, and shaping future research approaches. He also delivers cultural intelligence training for our staff and research partners.

Byron is also Head of Inclusion-Improvement, Chaplaincy, and Spiritual Care at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. In this role, he is responsible for implementing the Trust’s race equality and inclusivity agenda. With a wide range of further leadership and advisory roles in public and charity-funded healthcare and research organisations, Byron is a driving force in advancing equity, inclusion, and social change within the sector.
