Bio

Dr Michael Sagmeister is a Clinical Lecturer in Renal Medicine at the University of Birmingham and a Renal Medicine Registrar at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. His research focuses on the molecular and physiological mechanisms by which chronic kidney disease drives multimorbidity, with the goal of developing precision interventions through targeted therapies and patient stratification.

Michael’s work spans sarcopenia, steroid metabolism and inflammation in kidney disease. His research integrates human muscle biopsy studies, advanced molecular profiling, and translational preclinical models to investigate skeletal muscle loss and metabolic dysfunction, as well as other aspects of ageing and frailty.

A member of the University of Birmingham community for over a decade, Michael completed his PhD here through a Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship. He is energised by collaborative research that unites experts from different academic fields and bridges laboratory and clinical science. He also contributes to research and training as trainee representative for the Integrated Clinical Academic Training programme in the West Midlands and as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Birmingham NIHR Clinical Research Facility.
