Experts at the NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) played a leading national and international role in improving understanding of COVID-19 testing during the pandemic. Through large-scale evidence reviews, methodological research, primary studies and public engagement, Birmingham researchers helped inform the use, interpretation and evaluation of COVID-19 tests by clinicians, policymakers and the public.

A major contribution was the establishment of an international collaboration involving researchers from across Europe, Africa, Asia and North America to assess the accuracy and clinical value of COVID-19 diagnostic tests. This work produced a series of influential systematic reviews covering COVID-19 symptoms, imaging, laboratory markers and diagnostic tests, helping to provide a reliable evidence base during a period of rapidly evolving scientific knowledge. These reviews were incorporated into clinical guidance and policy discussions internationally.

Birmingham researchers also advanced understanding of how testing strategies could be used most effectively. This included investigating the performance of repeated testing approaches and contributing to the development of principles for evaluating diagnostic tests for infectious diseases. Their research helped address important questions about test accuracy, interpretation of results and the strengths and limitations of different testing approaches.

Beyond academic research, Birmingham experts became trusted voices throughout the pandemic, providing independent advice to policymakers, parliamentary inquiries, health organisations and the media. Their expertise helped inform public debate around mass testing and the use of rapid tests, ensuring that decisions were grounded in the best available evidence.

As of spring 2021, the programme generated more than 11 high-impact publications and reached millions of people through media appearances, public engagement activities and social media. Researchers contributed evidence to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, developed public information resources to improve understanding of COVID-19 testing and regularly provided expert commentary across national and international media outlets.

Through its leadership in diagnostic evaluation, evidence synthesis and public communication, the Birmingham BRC helped shape the national and international response to COVID-19 and strengthened the evidence base for the use of diagnostic testing during the pandemic.
