What research do we do?

The NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Birmingham does research into the causes, effects and treatment of inflammation.

Many health conditions result in inflammation. It is a normal part of the healing process. Inflammation shows itself as pain, swelling, heat, and loss of function or movement. However, sometimes the body overreacts. Too much inflammation causes further problems and linked with many health conditions, including:

  • Cancer
  • Arthritis
  • Infectious diseases
  • Poor metabolic health in women, such as diabetes and obesity
  • Liver disease
  • Oral and gut diseases
  • Loss of muscle mass and function (sarcopenia) and multiple co-existing long term conditions (multimorbidity)
